HEALTH EFFECTS OF LACK OF LIGHT

A lack of light can cause insomnia and other health disorders

Without daily exposure to good quality, natural light we can suffer from the following:

  • Irregular sleep patterns

With less light reaching the retina at the back of the eye, the sleep hormone, melatonin, is inadequately suppressed. As a result, older adults tend to nap more frequently during the day.

  • Insomnia

Insufficient amounts of light entering the eye, particularly blue light, disrupts the circadian rhythm, which can result in insomnia.

  • Vitamin D, calcium deficiency and osteoporosis

Insufficient exposure to natural daylight can lead to lack of Vitamin D and calcium, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Higher lighting levels are required to reverse the effects of age-related ocular changes and provide older adults with adequate visual, perceptual and circadian stimulation.
Biodynamic lighting can help by ‘bringing the natural daylight indoors.’. Ultimately, biodynamic or ‘people-centred’ lighting, can improve health and wellbeing, helping older people and those with health conditions such as dementia to enjoy a better quality of life.
