LIGHTING FOR HEALTH?

To promote and maintain good health, good light is needed

Everyone needs exposure to quality, natural light on a daily basis. However, people aged 40 plus with maturing eyesight, as well as older people with dementia and Alzheimer’s, need higher levels of quality light or biodynamic lighting to sustain their health and wellbeing than younger people.

Today most people spend at least 80%-90% of their time indoors. If indoor environments were created with light that simulates daylight and performs in a more natural way, this would stimulate, motivate and make us feel more comfortable in our living and working environments.

Yet the reality is that many older people spend a great deal of their time indoors in artificial lighting, which is no substitute for natural light. This light deficiency can ultimately cause a number of disorders, including:

    • Disruption in sleep pattern
    • Wakefulness
    • Confusion
    • Decreased activity
    • Reduced alertness
    • Daytime napping
    • Mood fluctuation
    • Agitation
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
